March Newsletter
NO. 56 | March 2026
From the Desk of Madison Moore is a monthly newsletter of friendly writing on living a creative life. Here, we celebrate the joy and magic of making things! And by reveling in the expansive definition of making, we acknowledge that we make things everyday. More concretely, I write about the process for all the kinds of things I make (books, clothes, illustrations, quilts, paintings, ceramics, baked goods, flowers…).
But, creativity is also more than an isolated craft—it’s a life practice. So you will find me writing about life, the natural world, home, food, and more.
I’ve been wishing I could press pause on everything so I can find my two feet beneath me. And, as we all know, that’s never quite possible. We have to keep going to work and taking care of ourselves and our loved ones. To-do lists don’t disappear unless you do the things on them. When I feel like this, the balance between rest and action is tricky. Burn out needs space and rest and time to heal, but it’s hard to find space for rest when the things you have to do are piling up around you.
If you’ve been here a while, you’ve heard me to say this many times before: for me, resetting means finding a new balance. I’m in the process of taking all the little bits of my current life and finding a way to bring them together harmoniously. After years of doing this when I encounter changes big and small, I am certain there is no right way and no formula that will work every time. But, with patience and introspection and experimentation, I do know it’s possible to find a way of living that makes it all work. Change, even when it is long-awaited and worked for, demands this kind of readjustment.
I must say, though, how grateful I am for the winter. This is the truest, snowiest, most consistent winter I can remember. While we can no longer expect this version of the season where I live, I am soaking up every moment of it while we have it. Buried under two feet of snow for the past two months is the most beautiful kind of hibernation, especially when the sun is shining, and the skies are blue.
I am bursting with things to make and do and share, but I tell myself every day: in time, in time, in time when I have put myself together anew (at least a little bit more).
Something else I love about the winter: it leaves a record. Temporary, yes, but a remarkable story of all the life (and death) that happens out of our sight. While I can’t pretend to guess at what kind of bird swooped down after this rabbit, or if it was successful, I felt so lucky to wander past this scene.
Portfolio Peek
This little character is far down the project queue, but this doesn’t make her any less beloved. I love doing graphite drawings like this—refining shape and texture without color. A reminder that those one day projects will wait as long as I need them to.
✷ I love the work of Freya Hartas
✷ My love for knitting has really skyrocketed this year, and I am obsessed with these yarn/color combo posts
✷ Fantastic loon painting
✷ Movie trailer of the month
